At Skill Abroad, we're committed to keeping you informed about the latest developments affecting Australian education sector. Here's a rundown of the significant changes coming into effect from July 1, 2024, that will impact international students in Australia.
Student Visa Fee Increase 📈
What's changing: The student visa application fee is set to increase dramatically from AUD$710 to AUD$1,600.
What it means for you: This 125% increase is substantial, so you'll need to budget more for your visa application. Remember, this fee is non-refundable, so make sure your application is thorough and accurate.
Additional changes for accompanying applicants: The Australian government will now charge AUD$1,445 for each accompanying applicant aged 18 and over. Accompanying family members under 18 years of age will be charged AUD$390.
Tip: Start saving for your visa fee early, and consider it as part of your overall investment in your Australian education.
2. Changes to Temporary Graduate Visas 🎓
What's changing: There are several updates to the Temporary Graduate visa, including:
Reduced stay duration for some visa holders
Age limit of 35 years for most applicants (with exceptions for research degrees and some nationalities)
Changes in stay periods based on degree type and nationality
Temporary Graduate Visa application fee increased to AUD$1,920
Stay periods for Indian nationals (under Australia India – Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement):
Bachelor degree (including honours): up to 2 years
Bachelor degree (with first class honours in STEM, including ICT): up to 3 years
Masters (coursework, extended and research): up to 3 years
Doctoral degrees (PhD): up to 4 years
What it means for you: These changes may affect your post-study plans in Australia. The duration of your stay after graduation will depend on your degree and, in some cases, your nationality.
Tip: Plan your studies and career path carefully. If you're aiming for a longer post-study work period, consider how your choice of degree might affect this.
3. End to "Student Visa Hopping" 🚫
What's changing: From July 1, 2024, holders of certain visas (including Visitor, Temporary Graduate, and Maritime Crew visas) can't apply for a Student visa while in Australia.
What it means for you: If you're planning to switch to a Student visa from another visa type, you'll need to leave Australia to apply.
Tip: Plan your visa strategy well in advance. If you're considering further studies, factor in the time and cost of potentially leaving Australia to apply for a new Student visa.
4. Minimum Wage Boost 💰
What's changing: The minimum wage in Australia is increasing to $24.10 per hour. This is an increase of 3.75% compared to the previous year.
What it means for you: This is great news for international students who often work part-time jobs. You'll be earning more for your hard work!
Tip: Remember, you're allowed to work up to 48 hours per fortnight during school sessions and unlimited hours during official holidays. Use this opportunity to gain valuable work experience and supplement your income.
5. Superannuation Increase 🏦
What's changing: The superannuation rate is increasing to 11.5% of your wages or salary.
What it means for you: While this might not impact you immediately, it's a boost to your long-term savings if you plan to work in Australia after graduation.
Tip: Take the time to understand the Australian superannuation system. It’s a distinctive feature of employment in Australia that can significantly enhance your long-term financial security. Knowing how it works will help you make the most of your contributions and plan for your future effectively.
6. New Visa for Young Indian Professionals 🇮🇳
What's changing: A new temporary visa (MATES - Mobility Arrangement for Talented Early-professionals Scheme) is being introduced for Indian nationals aged 18-30 in specific tech fields.
What it means for you: If you're an Indian student in fields like renewable energy, engineering, ICT, or agritech, this could open up new opportunities for you in Australia.
Tip: Keep an eye on the application process for this new visa. With only 3,000 places available, competition might be fierce!
